What Is PAPER?

PAPER is the reward token of Papertrade, a fair-launched synthetic perpetuals protocol on HyperEVM, minted only when a user's position closes at a loss or is liquidated. There is no team allocation, VC allocation, or airdrop; every PAPER token in existence was minted from a real trading loss, according to Papertrade's documentation.

Papertrade trades synthetic BTC and ETH perpetuals against its own liquidity pool at the Hyperliquid BBO mid price, up to 1000x leverage with a $10 million notional cap per position. The protocol took in $118 million in deposits in its first 24 hours after launching October 10, 2026 at 14:00 UTC, according to news.bitcoin.com, and held $67.8 million in TVL with $55.2 million in 7-day fees as of October 17, 2026, per DefiLlama.

This calculator estimates two things from Papertrade's published mint and staking formulas: how much PAPER a given loss mints at the protocol's current tracked LP size (a PAPER mining calculator, in effect), and what a USDC staking reward looks like for a given share of staked PAPER. Both are read-only estimates: the smart contract's own state is authoritative. Use the 1000x leverage calculator to see how close a given position sits to Papertrade's hard-bust trigger before it generates a loss.

How the PAPER Mint Curve Works

PAPER's token emissions follow two regimes: a flat 100 PAPER per $1 of loss while tracked LP is below $2 million (including while underwater), then a quadratic tail curve: 100 × (S / (S + H))², with S = $120 million, once LP crosses that threshold. H is a tail high-water mark that only ever increases, never resets.

The "tail high-water mark" (H) acts as a ratchet: once tracked LP passes $2 million, every additional dollar of loss advances both the LP total and H, and the marginal mint rate falls along the curve above. It does not recover if LP later drops: H only grows. At H = $100 million, the marginal rate works out to about 30 PAPER per $1 (100 × (120 / 220)² ≈ 29.75), a steep decline from the initial 100 PAPER per $1.

Why Early Losses Mint More PAPER

Early Papertrade losses mint at the maximum flat rate of 100 PAPER per $1 because the protocol's tracked LP starts at $0 and grows only from user losses, according to its documentation. Once cumulative losses push LP past $2 million, every subsequent dollar lands further down the same quadratic decay curve and mints proportionally less PAPER.

This design front-loads emissions toward the protocol's earliest users and tapers them as the liquidity pool (and therefore the protocol's ability to pay out winners) grows. A $1,000 loss when tracked LP is still $0 mints the full 100,000 PAPER (100 PAPER × $1,000); the identical $1,000 loss once the tail high-water mark has reached $100 million mints closer to 30,000 PAPER. OpenLiquid is not affiliated with Papertrade, and this calculator does not encourage taking a loss specifically to farm PAPER. See the FAQ below.

How Staking Pays USDC Yield

Staked PAPER earns USDC from half of every 2% trading fee Papertrade collects, plus any liquidity-pool excess above a $5 million cap, distributed pro-rata by share of total staked PAPER. Stake and unstake are both instant: there is no lockup period, according to Papertrade's documentation.

There's no fixed papertrade staking APR published by the protocol: the USDC paid out scales with trading fees and LP excess over the period, both of which move with trading activity, so actual PAPER staking USDC yield varies period to period. The formula is straightforward: your reward = (your PAPER / total staked PAPER) × (protocol fees × 50% + LP excess above $5M). A staker holding 1% of all staked PAPER when the protocol collects $200,000 in fees and runs $50,000 of LP excess earns roughly $1,500 in USDC for that period.

PAPER Can't Be Transferred Yet

PAPER is non-transferable at launch: Papertrade's documentation describes it as stake/unstake only, with no send, sell, or DEX trading function built in. That also means there is no PAPER market price to reference; any USD value you see quoted for PAPER outside Papertrade's own interface is not coming from the official token.

Copycat Token Warning

Official PAPER has no DEX pairs. Fake "Papertrade" tokens are already circulating on Solana, Base, and Robinhood Chain, according to Papertrade's documentation. If you can buy or sell a token called "PAPER" on any decentralized exchange, it is not the real Papertrade token: it is a copycat, and you should treat it as a scam. Verify contract addresses only through the official Papertrade documentation, never through a DEX search.

OpenLiquid is not affiliated with Papertrade. This calculator is an independent estimation tool built from Papertrade's public documentation; figures here are estimates only, and Papertrade's own smart contract is the authoritative source for your actual mint amount or staking reward. Losing a trade to mint more PAPER is not a strategy OpenLiquid recommends: PAPER's value is unconfirmed and non-transferable, so a deliberate loss is a guaranteed $1 cost for an uncertain return.

Risks to Know Before Trading on Papertrade

  • BBO manipulation: Papertrade prices every trade off Hyperliquid's best bid/offer mid, with no independent reference price. On October 11, 2026, a trader reportedly netted about $1.28 million by moving Hyperliquid's ETH BBO against open Papertrade positions, according to The Block.
  • Payout queue / insolvency: Papertrade's liquidity pool starts at $0 and grows only from user losses. When it can't pay out a win directly, that profit enters a FIFO queue and gets paid as future losses refill the LP: your principal is never queued, but a winning payout can wait.
  • Hard-bust liquidation: crossing the bust price (roughly 5 basis points before zero equity) forfeits the full isolated margin on that position instantly, with no partial liquidation. See the 1000x leverage calculator for exact bust prices by entry and leverage.
  • Copycat tokens: see the Copycat Token Warning above: fake "PAPER" tokens already trade on other chains, while the official token has no DEX pairs at all.

These are structural mechanics of how Papertrade works, not strategies to exploit: none of this is a reason to trade recklessly, and losing on purpose is still not a recommended way to farm PAPER. This section is risk awareness, not financial advice.

Key Takeaways

  • PAPER mints only on losing closes or liquidations (never on wins) at 100 PAPER per $1 while tracked LP is under $2 million, tapering along a quadratic tail curve (100 × (120M / (120M + H))²) above that.
  • The tail high-water mark (H) only increases; at H = $100M the marginal rate falls to roughly 30 PAPER per $1.
  • PAPER is non-transferable at launch: stake and unstake only, both instant, no DEX trading.
  • Staking pays USDC from half of every 2% trading fee plus LP excess above a $5 million cap, split pro-rata by staked share.
  • Papertrade launched October 10, 2026 (14:00 UTC) with $118M in first-day deposits (news.bitcoin.com); TVL was $67.8M with $55.2M in 7-day fees as of October 17, 2026 (DefiLlama).
  • Official PAPER has no DEX pairs: copycat tokens exist on Solana, Base, and Robinhood Chain. OpenLiquid is not affiliated with Papertrade, and losing on purpose to farm PAPER is not a recommended strategy.

Frequently Asked Questions

You earn PAPER only when a Papertrade position closes at a loss or is liquidated. Winning trades never mint PAPER. The mint rate is 100 PAPER per $1 of loss while the protocol's tracked liquidity pool stays below $2 million, including while it's underwater, according to Papertrade's documentation.

At the flat rate, $1 of loss mints 100 PAPER as long as tracked LP is below $2 million. Once tracked LP crosses $2 million, the rate tapers on a quadratic tail curve: 100 × (S / (S + H))² where S = $120 million, falling to roughly 30 PAPER per $1 once the tail high-water mark (H) reaches $100 million.

No. PAPER is non-transferable at launch; Papertrade's documentation states it can only be staked or unstaked, not sent, sold, or traded on any DEX. Any token you can buy or sell labeled "PAPER" on a decentralized exchange is not the official token.

Staking PAPER pays USDC from two sources: half of every 2% trading fee the protocol collects, plus any liquidity-pool excess above a $5 million cap, split pro-rata by your share of total staked PAPER. A staker holding 1% of total staked PAPER earns 1% of that combined USDC pool each period.

No. The official Papertrade PAPER token has no DEX pairs anywhere, including on Solana, according to Papertrade's documentation. Fake "Papertrade" tokens already circulate on Solana, Base, and Robinhood Chain; treat any tradable "PAPER" ticker as a copycat scam, not the real token.

No. Losing to farm PAPER is not a guaranteed profitable strategy. You lose $1 of real margin to mint PAPER tokens of uncertain, non-transferable value with no confirmed market price. This is not financial advice, and OpenLiquid does not recommend trading to lose on purpose.
